Black Owned Genetics (BOG) is a premium cannabis brand born in Kansas City, Missouri, in 2022. Founded by Shahid Battle, a Kansas City native with deep roots in the community, BOG is more than a cannabis company—it’s a movement to bring representation, culture, and excellence into an industry that has historically excluded the very people who helped shape it.
Shahid’s relationship with cannabis began at age 16, when a simple smoke session with friends sparked a lifelong passion. What started as consumption soon transformed into curiosity and eventually, love for cultivation. By the time he wrote his first college essay—earning an A for exploring the history, prohibition, and cultural impact of cannabis—he realized that cannabis was more than just a plant. It was a story of resilience, struggle, and justice.
Cannabis prohibition in the United States traces back to the early 1900s, when fear-mongering campaigns, rooted in racism, portrayed cannabis as a dangerous drug associated with Mexican immigrants and Black jazz musicians. These stereotypes fueled decades of criminalization, with Black communities disproportionately targeted and punished—even though studies consistently show that Black and white Americans consume cannabis at nearly identical rates. When cannabis legalization began in the U.S. with California in 1996 (medical) and later Colorado and Washington in 2012 (recreational), the same communities who bore the brunt of prohibition were largely left out of the booming legal industry.
This history lit a fire in Shahid. For him, cannabis wasn’t just about growing—it was about representation and breaking barriers.
Shahid started cultivating in 2017, in the corner of his second apartment with nothing but a night lamp. The turning point came when a friend of his younger brother gifted him a 2×4 grow tent and light. From there, he dove headfirst into learning—studying strains on SeedFinder, experimenting, and leveling up his setups:
From a small tent → to two closets
From closets → to a 4×10 grow
From the 4×10 → to a 15×15 fully automated cultivation facility
Each stage represented not only growth in scale but growth in skill, discipline, and vision.
Cultivation isn’t just what Shahid does—it’s who he is. The daily challenge to refine his craft, improve each harvest, and push boundaries is what fuels Black Owned Genetics.
The name Black Owned Genetics is intentional. Although Black communities are among the highest consumers of cannabis, they remain severely underrepresented in cultivation, processing, retail, and strain development. BOG was created to bridge that gap and to prove that Black ownership, excellence, and innovation belong at the forefront of the cannabis industry.
In March 2025, after eight years of relentless cultivation, Shahid and BOG entered their first competition—The Missouri Cannabis Cup—and proudly brought home 1st Place.
That win wasn’t just a trophy. It was a statement: when you’re dealing with Black Owned Genetics, you’re dealing with “The Best Cannabis Brand in Missouri.”
At BOG, we don’t just grow cannabis—we grow culture, representation, and legacy. Every strain we develop, every harvest we complete, and every jar we package reflects a commitment to quality, authenticity, and community empowerment.
And when you shop with BOG, you’ll receive a boutique-like experience—cannabis crafted with the same care, detail, and pride that went into growing it.
